How to Tell If Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

Your electrical panel is the control center of your home’s power system. When it functions properly, it distributes electricity safely and efficiently. When it doesn’t, the risk of overloads, fire hazards, and costly repairs increases. Recognizing the warning signs early can help you decide when it’s time for an electrical panel upgrade.

Panel Age

The industry recommendation for electrical panel replacement is typically 25-30 years. Many homeowners run their panels past this mark, but it can be a drain on the budget and a safety risk. Older panels often have worn-out components that lead to higher internal resistance, which can cause overheating. Likewise, corrosion and loose parts can create arcs that might start a fire.

Insufficient Amperage

The modern standard for a home electrical panel is 200 amps of service. Many older models offer 60-120 amps, which frequently isn’t enough for modern living. Many older homes were built for far fewer electrical demands. Adding an EV charger or high-load appliance can quickly overwhelm the system. If you expect to run lots of systems concurrently, such as a dryer/washer pair, the smart move is to upgrade the panel.

Physical Warning Signs

Visible damage often signals it’s time for an upgrade. Scorch markers or discolorations around the breakers typically indicate components are overheating. Melted insulation, damaged breaker casings, or a burning odor require immediate professional evaluation. A panel that feels warm to the touch, emits a buzzing sound, or contains breakers that will not reset properly may indicate serious internal failure. You should also be concerned about any rust that develops inside or near the unit.

Visible arcing is another potential sign of trouble. Arcs often develop due to component failures, and you may see or hear them near the panel.

Frequent Breaker Trips

Breakers are designed to trip when a circuit is overloaded. However, repeated trips under normal use often indicate that your panel no longer has adequate capacity for your household’s electrical demands. Even if the full panel doesn’t need an upgrade, you may want to upgrade or replace specific breakers. One or two breaker trips shouldn’t have you concerned, especially if they trip for predictable reasons. For example, running a power tool may trigger a trip and usually isn’t cause for concern. Conversely, you should be concerned if a breaker repeatedly trips.

Also, breaker trips across multiple circuits are a sign that capacity may be limited. Be aware, in particular, if the main breaker trips.

Lack of Available Breaker Slots

Optimally, each breaker should correspond to one circuit. Likewise, there should be additional openings that allow for expansion.

As people upgrade their homes, however, they can run out of slots. For example, you might run out of slots during an addition. Similarly, there may not be enough capacity or slots to support something like a standard 240-volt outlet or an EV charger.

There are sometimes more minimal upgrade options. Subpanels often serve as decent stop-gap solutions. Also, tandem breakers can power some low-powered circuits. However, the best solution is to upgrade to a better electrical panel.

Lights Flickering or Dimming

The lowest-power systems in your home are often the ones that show signs of trouble. If the system is strained, lights may flicker or dim. If you notice flickering or dimming after powering up a high-draw device, such as an electric dryer or an AC unit, your home may require an electric panel repair or upgrade from our licensed electricians.

Insurance and Code Compliance

Insurers may decline coverage for homes with certain outdated electrical panels. Some older designs, including those with aluminum bus bars, have higher failure risks than modern copper systems. In addition, electrical codes restrict specific recalled or obsolete models. Panels such as Federal Pacific (FPE) and Zinsco have documented safety concerns and are frequently flagged during inspections.

The need for an upgrade may not be apparent until you do something major with the house. Code and insurance concerns often don’t arise until people move. Inspections during household upgrades also sometimes reveal compliance concerns.
